It starts with the tying of the Gi, the bow at the front of the mat and the handshake with the opponent but it ends in wiping sweat from your forehead, your hand in the air for the win and the confidence in knowing the triumph is yours. This is Jiu Jitsu. Welcome to the lifestyle of the strong and the fearless, the proud and the spirited, Jiu Jitsu reigns over all martial arts. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not only a sport that requires extreme effort and strict technical skills it also is a way of life. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu standards of living are eating healthy, training hard and obtaining a peaceful mind. Although it may sound intimidating, this should not be perceived as near impossible. Jiu Jitsu lifestyle, is enjoyable and puts your mind, body and soul on track, it can be useful for men and women at any age, including young adults and children. Weather your goal is for better fitness, weight loss, stress relief or just to get out and try something new, the sport along with the lifestyle change is worth a chance.

A large aspect of the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle is eating correctly and making sure your body is getting the right nutrition and functioning properly. Water is a huge part of staying healthy. Water makes up about 60% of your body and it should be consumed throughout the day to prevent dehydration especially even more if you engage in exercise. Along with drinking water, the Gracie Diet is recommended for the progression into the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle. The basics of the diet are to know what foods should be consumed together at each meal and what foods are not compatible with each other. There is always room for improving your diet, but it does take some dedication and fine tuning to get the eating habits precise. The diet is not practical starvation or telling you what you can and cannot eat. It simply breaks down what foods are essential to maintaining a healthy body and in what order and when they should be eaten. You’re going to get out what you put into your body and with the Gracie Diet the results are worth trying for.

The second component of theJiu Jitsu daily life is the training and exercise. While there is plenty of cardio involved in sparing (live technical fighting, with resistance) running and other cardio vascular type exercises are necessary especially at competition level. Cardio is the basis to improving your heart and lungs, knowing how to control your breathing is very important when it comes to Jiu Jitsu. Probably the most important piece of fighting Jiu Jitsu is learning, practicing and perfecting the techniques used to battle. Being perfect with all the Jiu Jitsu techniques takes a lot of practice but in time the techniques cannot only be used on the mat but also for self-defense in the real world. Self-defense is learned through Jiu Jitsu. Learning how to escape from an oncoming threat or out of a dangerous situation is something you will begin to learn just after your first session of training. The self-defense techniques used are highly recommended for women and children to learn. After mastering just a few simple escape techniques confidence and self esteem is built and there is a sense of peace that the participant now knows how to have a chance of staying safe if an attacker were to ever approach you. The sport of Jiu Jitsu takes years to master but the trainings is very enjoyable and really boosts your confidence in life and in the sport.

The third part of the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle is keeping a quiet and balanced mind. You must have the determination to succeed and the drive to get better every day but this sport is for everyone. Sleep and rest is a big part of keeping a well-balanced state of mind. Sleep is used to relax and replenish the mind and body. Not getting enough sleep can result in irritability and not being able to be one hundred percent at the next training session. Finally, acceptance is a key component to keeping a balanced mind. Accepting losses and wins at the competition level and also accepting that Jiu Jitsu is not mastered over night and that it takes time and effort. Acceptance that there will always be somebody out there better than you but trying your best at any level is all you can be. Keep a practical and realistic mindset throughout training Jiu Jitsu and in your transformation into perfecting the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle and you will become a happier more accepting person throughout your journey.

The Jiu Jitsu lifestyle may sound like a lot of work but the pay off is incredible. Being healthy in all aspects of your body and your surroundings is the basis of the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle and especially the Gracie Jiu Jitsu lifestyle.
