Professor Alex Faria – Head Instructor
Professor Alex Faria is a 3rd degree (August 2019 promotion) Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Roger Gracie
Professor Alex Faria started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 under BJJ legend José Leão Teixeira, also known by his nickname: “Zé Beleza.” Ze Beleza, along with Carlos and Crolin Gracie, and Machado opened the very first Gracie Barra school in Rio.
After earning his Brown Belt under Zé Beleza in 2001, Alex Faria moved to London to train with Roger Gracie – a 10 time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion. Professor Alex trained for 8 years, and earned his Black Belt from Roger in 2009. Because Roger Gracie traveled often, he eventually handpicked Alex to become his Headquarters Head Instructor.
Alex trained alongside UFC & World Champions such as Georges St-Pierre, Braulio Estima, Fabio Gurgel, Clark Gracie, Lucio ‘Lagarto’ Rodrigues, Luciano Cristovam, Lucio Sergio Dos Santos, Publio Caetano, Gustavo Pires ‘Siri’, Kywan Gracie, and many more greats. The school was rated one of the ‘Top 10 BJJ places to train in the World’. Alex had the added privilege of training under Roger’s father Maurício “Maurição” Motta Gomes, one of the “Famous Five” legendary Rolls Gracie black belts.
Alex has been featured several times in BJJ magazines alongside Roger Gracie, showing positions. Due to his notoriety as a Roger Gracie head instructor and black belt, he has also taught seminars in Brazil, Spain and California, as well as in London.
Professor Alex could not compete much while being head instructor at the Roger Gracie Academy Headquarters, however once he moved to the US, in 2015, he started competing again. He placed in several prestigious IBJJF championships and was ranked #10 in the IBJJF worldwide. He won Gold in Houston in his division and Bronze in the absolute division, Gold in Boca Raton, and Silver in Boston.
Professor Alex re-started competing in 2015, while taking over the reins, and re-energizing a school which has lost its black belt, at Gracie Gym. Taking the school from less than 30 students, to today’s multiple locations at Sharpen Iron(rebranded Gracie Gym in 2019), he has been instrumental in spreading Jiu Jitsu to cities in North Texas.
Many of Alex’s students have won medals at IBJJF world championships. From winning Gold and placing at Masters Worlds, to Adult Worlds and Pans, to countless IBJJF and other tournament Opens, Professor Alex is dedicated to giving, and expecting the best of every student. He tirelessly inspires people to achieve their best, on and off the mat. He believes the mat is simply a conduit to life lessons.
Alex is also an accredited IBJJF referee, and each year makes sure to get re-certified in order to keep up with the changing rules of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Most recently, in 2018, Professor Alex has taken on the coaching of MMA fighters, such as Edmaicon Moraes. His expertise in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is now also being used in the cage to help fighters.
